I’ve decided to stop dyeing my hair

I never thought I should hear myself say that I want to have grey hair but now I’ve said it. I’ve decided to stop colouring my hair in order to cover up my greys which have increased in numbers.

How do you go from brown to grey? I have spent hours on Google to try to find the best way and decided that highlights must be the best way hoping that it will cover up my grey root regrowth.

I booked an appointment with a hairdresser who was willing to take on the challenge despite of my long thick hair and the time she needed for the project was approx. 3 ½ hour. The hairdresser and Google had warned med that I wouldn’t get a satisfying result after just one treatment and I shouldn’t expect that the highlights would turn out grey.

The hairdresser started to cut my hair and it took at bit of persuasion before I accepted her suggestion about taking 25 cm of the length. I do like my long and heavy hair (even though I must admit that it can be a bit of a hassle from time to time) and the love of my life likes it too. She took 25 cm off and it feels short, but I’ll live…

I was looking forward to the see if the result and it was not a disaster even though it looked different from what I had hoped for.

The highlights had different colours from blonde to dark blonde with a touch of reddish. The explanation I got was that it was caused by the different intensity of dye in the hair. Some of it hasn’t been dyed in years and some just last month. The contrast between my grey root regrowth and the highlights was bigger than I expected but there are ways to fix that. I can use Silver Shampoo or chamomile shampoo. It is also possible to tone the hair grey with a colour that fades and last in about six weeks and I think I’ll choose that solution.

So, the result I got was not perfect and I know it will take years for me to get my natural colour back but this is the first step of the way.

Wasp nest

Well, all of us have to live here on this earth, but I am, to be honest, grateful that someone or something has put an end to this wasp queen’s attempt to build a home for her clan near my little red house and this are the reasons why.

Firstly, I have never had the ability to sit still when a wasp comes too close. I panic and flutter hysterically with arms and legs. It may make the wasp irritated and more aggressive, but I call on the right to defend myself and attack is, as you probably know, the best form of defence or…?

Secondly, wasps kill honey bees if they can get away with it and I what to do what I can to avoid open war between wasps and wild bees who are diligent and welcoming guests in my garden.

With that said, wasps do most likely have their justification by being useful somewhere in the food chain, and I hope they will continue doing so as long as they stay away from my garden and “my” honey bees.

Lathyrus eksperiment

Lathyrus i potter.

Sidste sommer havde jeg planlagt en overdådig mængde Lathyrus langs med hegnet rundt om haven, men den ekstremt tørre sommer gjorde, at det bare var nogle enkelte planter der klarede sig og mængden af blomster var beskeden.

I år har jeg en lidt mere behersket forventning og fik lyst til at prøve at forspire på en måde jeg har læst om på nettet som forslog, at man sår frøene allerede i marts måned og sætter dem ud i et drivhus eller en koldbænk.

Jeg bor i vækstzone 2 i Sverige og i slutningen af marts satte jeg potterne med mine nysåede Lathyrusfrø ud i mit lille (meget lille) plastdrivhus.

De spirede ret hurtigt på trods af, at jeg ikke havde lagt frøene i vand inden de blev lagt i jorden. De sommerlignende dagstemperature vi havde i april, har måske nok været medvirkende til at de kom godt i gang, men jeg er imponeret over, at de har overlevet store temperaturudsving og ikke mindst nattefrost helt ned til -7 grader.

Jeg burde egentlig have plantet dem om i større potter, men det springer jeg over og i weekenden bliver de plantet ud i haven, så må vi se hvordan det går…

Tick count 2019

Jack Dempsey

The tick season has started along with the fantastic weather we’ve had in April this year.

We have taken the necessary precautions, which means vaccination against TBE for me and for Dempsey, it’s unfortunately Frontline (spot-on treatment ) that applies, because all alternative methods we have tested don’t work as intended.

A long-haired outdoor cat who loves life in the woods can present some challenges, and one of them is that our house isn’t tick free zone during the summertime.

By combing Dempsey when he comes in from his adventures in the wild, I get hold of most small beasts before they start to feed on the cat or get too attached to me.

Last year we caught and killed 385 ticks. This year’s statistics will be regularly updated and can be seen here

Nyt oversættelsesprojekt

I går modtog jeg tekstfilen til mit næste oversættelsesprojekt Jag sjunger när jag lyssnar af Torbjörn Skog. Jeg glæder mig til at tilbringe de kommende måneder i forfatterens tankeunivers.

Jeg har endnu ikke haft tid til at læse romanen i bogform, men har tidligere oversat Torbjörns roman Samtal med Joseph til dansk og er overbevist om, at min nye opgave bliver lige så spændende og inspirerende som den første har været.

Hjemmelavet havremælk / Hemmagjord havremjölk

Jeg har længe været en stor fan af Oatlys iKaffe, men ville se om det var muligt selv at lave en  havremælk/havremjölk der bare tilnærmelsesvis var lige så god.

Mine første forsøg var ingen ubetinget succes. Jo da, det var havremælk/havremjölk, men uden den cremede konsistens jeg var ude efter. Hvis det man gør ikke fungerer, så må man finde på noget andet og HURRA, det lykkedes…

Opskrift / Recept

Ingredienser:

  • 8 dl vand
  • 1½ dl havregryn
  • ½ dl uskallede sesamfrø
  • 1 tsk. chiafrø
  • 3 spsk. rapsolie
  • 1 tsk. akaciehonning
  • ½ tsk. salt

Fremgangsmåde / Så gör du:

  1. Bland vand, havregryn, sesamfrø og chiafrø i en skål med låg. Rør rundt og lad det stå i mindst en time.
  2. Hæld blandingen over i en blender og tilsæt rapsolie, akaciehomming og salt.
  3. Kør blenderen på højeste hastighed i et par minutter.
  4. Hæld blandingen igennem en tyndmasket si/sil. Rør rundt med en ske eller dejskraber/spatel til der kun er havrepulb/havrerester tilbage i sien/silen
  5. Si derefter havremælken/havremjölken gennem et osteklæde/saftsil for at fjerne de sidste rester af havre og frø. Det kan være nødvendigt at vride/krama den sidste vædske ud med hænderne.
  6. Hæld over på en ren flaske med tætsluttnede låg.
  7. Hvis du vil have lidt krydderi på tilværelsen så prøv at  tilsætte ½ tsk. af f.eks vaniljeekstrakt, kanel eller kardemomme.

Holdbarheden er omkring 4 dage på køl/i kylen.
